Ciftlik

Çiftliks are large pieces of land granted to people of higher standing by the Ottoman government in Istanbul and greater Turkey. They functioned as private farms and estates. Over the last century Çiftliks have transformed from privately owned farms into public parks, roads, or buildings in urban areas such as Istanbul. The photograph seen here shows one such çiftlik in 1903 before it was converted from private to public land.
